Why do your curls sometimes lack bounce?
Many people confuse hydration and nourishment. Layering rich creams, butters, or oils before a styling product prevents water from penetrating the hair fiber: curls become heavy, dull, and stiff. Thirsty hair needs water and humectants (aloe, glycerin, panthenol)... not oil.
Hydration and definition: two distinct roles, to be carried out in the right order
Hydrating = providing water via a humectant product (leave-in).
Define = fix this hydration and the shape of the curls with a styling product (mousse/gel).
Styling products do not replace hydration; they seal it in and structure movement.
The ideal combination: a moisturizing leave-in conditioner + a suitable styling product
1) The moisturizing leave-in (light and water-based)
Apply a small amount to clean, damp hair. It deeply hydrates without weighing hair down and prepares the hair for styling.
- Brown Butter Beauty – Sweet Milk Leave-In : ultra moisturizing, fluid, clean.
- As I Am – Leave-In Conditioner : excellent value for money.
2) Styling product (mousse or gel)
Next comes the shaping. Choose according to the desired effect (softness/volume with mousse; defined design/anti-frizz with jelly/gel).
- Flora & Curl – Sweet Hibiscus Curl Volumizing Foam : lightweight mousse, volume and shine.
- Camille Rose – Curl Maker : soft defining gel, clean finish.
- Miche Beauty – Tropical Oasis Gel : anti-humidity hold, long-lasting defined curls.
3) Drying (do not touch until the hair is 100% dry)
Allow to air dry at home (avoid humidity at all costs) or ideally use a diffuser. Once dry, gently separate the curls to add volume without creating frizz.

And what about the creams in all of this?
Creams have their place for nourishing styles (twist-out, braid-out, vanilla).
But for a wash & go with mousse/gel: no cream beforehand .
Base = light leave-in conditioner, then styling product.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Apply a cream/oil before a mousse or jelly (the styling product won't adhere).
- Applying multiple layers "to hydrate" saturates the fiber, and the curls become flattened.
- Refresh with gel only: start by re-hydrating (spray or light leave-in).
- Confusing shine with health: shiny hair is not necessarily hydrated.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do you need to hydrate every day?
Not necessarily. With a good leave-in conditioner and a styling product to seal in moisture, hydration lasts for several days. Refresh with a light spray if needed.
Can I mix leave-in conditioner and jelly?
Yes, it's the ideal combination for a wash & go: light moisturizing base, then gel or mousse.
Why avoid using cream before a mousse/jelly?
Because it creates a greasy barrier that prevents styling products from adhering, weighs down the hair fiber and breaks down definition.
