It's a question we often get asked in store: "your satin pillowcase or your silk pillowcase, which one is better?" The honest answer is that there's no wrong choice between the two — there are simply two levels of expectation, and two materials that are too often confused, when, deep down, they have almost nothing in common.
Satin is not a material, it's a weaving technique
The first thing to understand is that "satin" does not refer to a fiber, but to a weaving method. Polyester, viscose, nylon — or silk — can be woven in satin. It's this particular weave pattern that gives it that recognizable smooth and shiny appearance, regardless of the fiber used.
At Colorful Black, our historical satin pillowcases, which have been among our bestsellers for several years, are made from premium polyester. This is a deliberate and well-considered choice: this satin already offers real protection against friction and frizz, at a price that makes it accessible to all budgets. Many of our customers build their entire nighttime hair protection routine around this product, and they are right: it is an excellent, proven accessory.
Silk, a natural fiber with properties that nothing else truly replicates
Pure silk, on the other hand, is a completely different material. It is not a weaving technique; it is an animal fiber, produced by the mulberry silkworm, spun into a long natural filament. And it is precisely because it is natural that it possesses properties that even the best polyester satin cannot identically reproduce:
- It is composed of proteins and amino acids similar to those that make up hair itself, which partly explains its unique softness when in contact with hair fibers.
- It is thermoregulating: it naturally adapts to body temperature, unlike polyester, which retains more heat.
- It is not derived from petrochemicals: while polyester is a synthetic fiber derived from petroleum, silk is a noble, biodegradable material whose production does not depend on any fossil resources.
- It is hypoallergenic and naturally resistant to dust mites, an asset for sensitive skin and scalps.
It is this entire set of intrinsic qualities, and not just the touch, that makes pure silk a unique material in the world of textiles and nightwear. It's no coincidence that it has been associated with luxury for centuries: it has always deserved it.
Why we developed Colorful Black Silk in 22 momme mulberry silk
For our Colorful Black Silk collection, we chose 22 momme, Oeko-Tex certified mulberry silk. Momme is the unit that measures the density of the fabric: the higher this number, the denser, more resistant, and more durable the silk is, without losing its suppleness. At 22 momme, we achieve the desired balance between a material robust enough to last over time, and fine enough to retain all the comfort and lightness characteristic of silk. Oeko-Tex certification guarantees the absence of harmful substances throughout the fabric, from fibers to dyes.
So, satin or silk: how to choose?
There is no universal answer, only a question of priorities:
- Are you new to nighttime protection or looking for an effective everyday accessory without a big budget? Our satin pillowcase remains an excellent, reliable, and proven choice.
- Do you want to offer your hair and skin the best possible care, with a 100% natural material, free of any petrochemical traces? The Colorful Black Silk 22 momme pure mulberry silk pillowcase is for you.
- Do you also want to take care of your hair during the day, without tension or marks on the lengths? The silk scrunchie perfectly complements your pillowcase, whether it's satin or pure silk.
The most important thing, in the end, is not to choose between satin and silk, but to choose a soft, non-absorbent material that respects the hair fiber, rather than cotton which damages textured hair night after night. Satin or silk: both are already a huge step forward for your hair. Pure silk, however, is simply the next step — the one you take when you want to give your hair and skin the most natural and precious care.
